Empathetic Observations. Not empathy in the sense of kindness and feeling but assessing and acknowledging situations and various states of mind through other people's points of view. This is a tool that originated from a simple card game, Magic the gathering.
I started about 7 months ago and in that period of time I've been climbing the local player base with great success. Our local shop has quite a bit of top tier talent on the tournament scene and i was introduced to this level of competition within my first weeks of starting the game.
One of our top players, (if not for his lack of resources and marital status he would most likely be considered the greatest), is absolutely one-hundred-percent, without a doubt the greatest profiler and reader that i have ever met.
Whenever he talks in a match its to serve a purpose. He can say things in a match to make you rethink the perfect play and possibly change it.
He's even gotten me a few times.
Play skill in this game is almost completely derived from your ability to know what your opponents deck does, his possible plays on any given turn, and the ability to manipulate your opponent to think otherwise. Compared to players of this caliber, i've only scratched the surface of this talent and it has already begun to make an impact in my game (most recently at my first Pro Tour event in Columbus where i finished 5-4).
If this is the kind of thing you're interested in and this kind of game appeals to you, Magic the gathering PDF.
Check your local listings for possible shop locations if you are so inclined to continue learning and playing.
Happy engineering.
